Buy an iPad keyboard case for a complete model name, not a screen-size label. Write down the iPad family, generation or chip, and display size before browsing. Then decide whether you want a keyboard that stays attached during travel, a detachable keyboard for a desk, or simply a stand and a separate keyboard. That decision changes the package you should compare.
Similar names cover different accessories
Apple's keyboard guide separates Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro, Magic Keyboard for iPad Air, earlier Magic Keyboard models, Magic Keyboard Folio and Smart Keyboard products. Their compatibility lists differ. As a concrete example, Apple's Magic Keyboard Folio specification lists iPad A16 and iPad 10th generation. The 2025 Magic Keyboard for iPad Air 11-inch lists compatible 11-inch Air generations and iPad Air 4th and 5th generation. Check the individual product specification instead of relying on “for iPad” in a marketplace title.
Choose where you will actually type
Sketch your usual setup. At a dining table, a separate keyboard and stand might give you flexibility in screen position. On a small train table, a compact attached design may be easier to arrange. For drawing, a keyboard that detaches cleanly can be more convenient than keeping keys beneath the tablet. These are workspace tradeoffs; the best choice depends on your posture, available surface and how often you switch between touch and typing.
Do not judge a case only in its closed position. Look for dimensions and photos showing it open, note how the back support occupies a table, and check whether the viewing angles suit your likely use. If you carry the iPad in a small bag, compare the case dimensions with the bag opening, especially if a Pencil holder adds width.
Check charging and accessory access
Apple describes the USB-C connector on the cited iPad Air Magic Keyboard as a charging connection. Treat it accordingly rather than assuming it duplicates every function of the iPad's own port. Plan where an SSD, display adapter or card reader will connect. For third-party keyboards, read the manufacturer documentation for pairing, battery charging and the availability of shortcuts you use frequently.
Inspect the final variation and bundle
One Amazon listing can group different sizes, layouts and colors. Verify the selected iPad compatibility after changing any option. Check the keyboard language and key layout, whether a Pencil is only pictured or actually included, and the return terms. A substantial discount does not rescue an accessory that leaves you with the wrong connector placement or unsupported model.
If you are replacing both tablet and keyboard, budget them as one system. Decide which functions must travel with you and which can remain on the desk. That helps prevent buying an expensive attached keyboard and then adding a second desk keyboard to solve a use case you could have anticipated.
