Which Apple Pencil Fits Your iPad? A Compatibility-First Buying Guide

The right Apple Pencil is the one listed for your exact iPad. Start with the model name in Settings, including the chip or generation, and copy it into your shopping notes. “iPad Pro” or “11-inch iPad” is not specific enough. Several generations share similar names while supporting different accessories. Decide on features only after you have narrowed the list to compatible Pencils.
Use the compatibility list as the first filter
Apple publishes separate lists for Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C), Apple Pencil (2nd generation) and Apple Pencil (1st generation). For example, iPad Air with M2 or M3 supports Pencil Pro, while iPad Air 4th and 5th generation supports Pencil 2nd generation. Apple also lists Pencil USB-C for those iPad Air families. These examples show why “works with iPad Air” is an incomplete product description.
For iPad 10th generation and iPad A16, Apple's compatibility page lists Pencil USB-C and Pencil 1st generation; the latter requires the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter for pairing and charging. Confirm whether an adapter is included in the exact bundle you select. A product photo showing a Pencil beside an iPad is not evidence that every iPad in that family is supported.
Choose around the work you do
Make a list of your three most common tasks: handwriting notes, marking PDFs, sketching, photo retouching or detailed illustration. Then compare the supported Pencil's feature table against those tasks. If an art workflow depends on pressure response or a specific gesture, verify that feature explicitly; do not infer it from the Apple Pencil name. A note-taking purchase can prioritize an uncomplicated charging routine and a holder that keeps the Pencil with the tablet.
Think through the whole desk and bag
A compatible stylus still needs to fit your routine. Check whether your case leaves the required attachment area accessible and whether its Pencil pocket was designed for the correct version. If you move between classrooms or meeting rooms, decide where the Pencil will live while the iPad is closed. If multiple family members use different iPads, label accessories to avoid switching apparently similar Pencils between incompatible devices.
For an older iPad, consider the cost of the Pencil, any required adapter, replacement tips and a suitable case together. That total is more useful than comparing the stylus alone. Keeping an existing compatible Pencil can be sensible, but verify the new tablet before assuming the accessory will move with it.
Check the exact listing
Read the generation in the title and the selected variation. A replacement tip, protective sleeve and complete Apple Pencil can appear in nearby results. Make sure the product includes the Pencil itself. Our recommendation is to keep Apple's model list open while checking the final Amazon selection.
