Decide what an external drive is for before comparing capacity or advertised speed. A drive holding the only copy of a video project is working storage; a second copy protects against losing that project. Those are different jobs. Write down whether you need portable files, shared Mac and Windows storage, an iPad media workflow or a Mac backup, then choose the connection and format around that purpose.

Match the drive to the device and cable

Record the actual Mac or iPad model and the port you plan to use. Check the drive's interface, the supplied cable and any adapter or hub in between. Buying a fast drive does not establish the speed of the entire path. If you will frequently carry it with a tablet, consider the cable's length, connector clearance and where the drive will rest while the tablet is in use.

Check iPad power and format requirements

Apple documents external drive access through Files and supported apps on iPad. Its guide specifies a single data partition and supported file systems, including APFS and exFAT. Some drives need additional power, so read the drive and iPad guidance before assuming a bus-powered arrangement will work. An adapter that physically connects the devices is only one part of compatibility.

Plan the actual app workflow too. Identify where files will be opened, edited and saved, and make a small test with representative files before moving a whole project. Do not erase or reformat a drive that contains your only copy of anything. Copy and verify important data elsewhere before making a format change.

Choose a format for the systems you use

Apple's Disk Utility documentation describes APFS as the Mac file system and lists exFAT among Windows-compatible formats. The right choice depends on the computers and apps that must read the drive. A drive dedicated to a Mac workflow and one that moves between Mac and Windows need not use the same format. Follow the requirements of the intended backup or editing application as well.

Give backups their own capacity plan

Apple recommends a Time Machine storage device with at least twice the Mac's storage capacity and describes using the backup disk for Time Machine. That is a useful starting point for a dedicated Mac backup purchase. Our practical preference is to keep the role of each drive obvious: label working storage and backup storage so that an empty-looking disk is not accidentally treated as spare space.

When checking Amazon offers, compare the exact capacity, model and supplied cable. A large number in a product name might refer to a family maximum rather than the selected variation. Inspect the return terms, test the new drive in your actual setup and confirm that a sample backup can be found before relying on it.

Common questions

Is an external SSD automatically a backup?
Only if it contains an additional recoverable copy of the files you need. A drive holding the sole copy of a project is primary storage, regardless of where it connects.
Can I use one drive with Mac and Windows?
Potentially, with a format and workflow supported by both systems. Apple lists exFAT as Windows-compatible; verify your applications and protect existing data before reformatting.
Can an iPad use every USB drive without extra equipment?
No. Check the connector, file format, partition layout, power needs and app workflow. Apple notes that some external drives need an additional power source.
